Pond & Waterfall Foam — Black Expanding Sealant
Pond Waterfall Foam — Black Expanding Sealant for Ponds
Waterfall foam is a low-expansion polyurethane sealant that bonds rocks together and seals the gaps water would otherwise sneak through. It's the difference between a waterfall that looks natural and one that loses half its flow into the ground.
Two things to know about waterfall foam before you buy:
- It must be black — yellow expanding foam (the kind from a hardware store) shows up bright in any gap and ruins the natural look. Black foam disappears into shadow.
- It must be fish-safe and non-leaching — generic construction foam can off-gas chemicals into pond water. The brands we stock (Pondmax, Aquascape) are tested for aquatic use.
Where to use waterfall foam
- Sealing rocks on a waterfall: bond stones together, fill voids behind the rocks so all water flows over the top, not through the back.
- Stream beds: seal liner edges and rocks along a stream so water doesn't escape underneath.
- Pond edge concealment: hide the EPDM liner edge by foaming rocks against it, then trimming flush.
- Spillway construction: seal spillway boxes against the surrounding rock work.
How much you'll need
A standard 750ml can covers roughly 0.8–1.2 linear metres of waterfall edge depending on void size. For most home waterfalls (2–3m run), one can does it. Larger features need 2–3 cans. Bulk packs (case of 12) are popular with landscape builders.
Application notes
- Apply when surfaces are dry — water on the rocks slows the cure
- Foam expands roughly 2× — start with less than you think you need
- Working time: 5 minutes from dispense to skin-over
- Full cure: 24 hours before flooding the waterfall
- Trim excess with a sharp utility knife once cured — don't pull it
