Fountain Pumps for Water Features and Ponds

A fountain pump is a smaller, lower-flow pump designed to push water vertically through a nozzle to create a display. The fountain head shape determines the spray pattern — bell, dandelion, lava, foam, trumpet — but it's the pump that determines how high the water goes and how clean the jet looks.

How to size a fountain pump

Two specs matter: flow rate (L/h) and maximum head height (metres). Manufacturers list a max head, but the pump rarely produces a clean fountain at the top of its range. Aim for a pump rated for 1.5× the height you actually want.

• Tabletop/birdbath fountains: 200–500 L/h, 0.5–1m head
• Patio water features: 800–1,500 L/h, 1–1.5m head
• Garden pond displays: 2,000–4,000 L/h, 1.5–2.5m head
• Large pond centrepiece: 5,000+ L/h, 2.5m+ head

Fountain pump versus pond pump

For a pure decorative fountain (no fish, no filter loop), a small dedicated fountain pump is much simpler. Drop it in the basin, plug it in, done.

Adjustable flow

Most modern fountain pumps have a built-in flow valve so you can dial the spray height down. Useful in two scenarios:

• The display looks too aggressive and water sprays out of the basin
• You want to slow it down on windy days
